It was Benjamin Franklin that was credited with saying…
‘Out of adversity comes opportunity’
…and the Covid crisis, whilst it may not feel that way to many, is creating opportunities never previously available.
I am delighted to say that this week, I took my first brief for my new business. It’s a local SME and one that is very much taking the words of Franklin to heart. It’s a pharmaceutical business which has been doing well throughout the crisis, but has decided to make now the time to invest and grow, and in this creating new job opportunities…
The business is planning on relocating to a larger facility. I am potentially going to be engaged to help them maximise this opportunity by using a lean approach to develop not only an ideal state layout, but also maximise the value of all the fixtures and fittings to create a fantastic new workspace that is not only great to work in, but also truly showcases the phenomenal quality of the business itself.
The current, architect designed facility, has little empathy for the use of the building and whilst functional, does not facilitate flow for people or process. My initial design increases available space by circa 20% whilst also simplifying how the building can be used. Having run some quick calculations, the additional cost of using myself as a consultant for the design has a payback of 6-12 months.
The design has also been future proofed, with provision for further growth and improved access for disabled if required. There are also some real ‘Wow!’ factors that will truly come into their own when visitors arrive
In making the move, the business plans to grow the headcount by circa 15% and the top line by significantly more than this…..all of which is fantastic news for the local economy.
It’s a very exciting 14 week project, that I should find out next week if I have won. If not, there are several other good projects in the pipeline, but this one really does excite me with the opportunity to generate more jobs locally, and a great opportunity for a UK business to increase its presence on the European continent and further afield.
